Adventures with
Mum and Aunty Norrie
#14

Last winter, Norrie was in pain. Her leg and hip hurt. She is usually very stoic and long suffering so when she complained, I knew she was hurting.

Her doctor couldn’t be sure what was causing the pain, so it was decided Norrie should go into hospital for a couple of days for observation.

I was dreading this – how was I going to get Norrie to leave her unit to go to spend some time in hospital. Even with the doctor telling her it was necessary and Norrie eventually agreeing – unwillingly, of course, I knew I would have a battle on my hands, when the actual time came to put her in the car together with her night attire and toiletries.

I promised her I would be close most of the time and that my exceptional sister, Cathy, and her great husband, Colin, my much loved brother, Graeme, and my special sister-in-law, Helen, would visit her as well. Norrie also has super nieces from her sister Peg’s family, and I knew that Vicky and Gayle would call in to the hospital if they could.

The nurses were wonderful and two of them fussed around Norrie. She acclimatized to her room and adjoining bathroom in better time that I had anticipated. I warned the nurses not to let her wander, as she would never find her way back to her room. She would forget that she was even in a hospital and could wander out on to the road.

I couldn’t put it off any longer, I had to leave. I had a meeting in my office. At least my brother said he would visit Norrie that evening.
