Two Talks over Two Days

If you're looking for something writing related over the next couple of days, Elizabeth is doing two free talks at the Bodhi Tree in Mt Hawthorn.

The first one is tomorrow (Friday) at 2pm on writing in general. Elizabeth will have my writing coach hat on so come along with your writing questions.

On Saturday at 11am she'll be talking about autobiographical writing in relation to being a carer for those with dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

What a great trip Pamela and I had to Sydney. Everything went so well and people were so kind.

One of the many things that came out of the trip (other than shopping) was an interview with Tony Delroy for his Night Life show on ABC, which is due to be aired tomorrow (Thursday) at 9.15 pm WA time. Our Sydney 'Caring Moments' Tour

Well, the exciting news is that Pamela Eaves and I are off to Sydney tomorrow for a flying visit to launch and promote Caring Moments.

Alzheimer's Australia have kindly offered to launch our book at their Open Day on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday we are being interviewed on Canberra ABC radio by Genevieve Jacobs at 2pm and then by Tony Delroy for his Night Life show for Sydney ABC. Other than that, who knows what else might happened between our other meetings (probably way too much shopping and stops at the Lindt Chocolate Cafe).

So, if you feel like finding out more about the book or buying your copy please tune in to your local radio stations or pop down to the Alzheimer's Australia building for the Open Day.

The Peter Cowan Writer's Centre's heritage cottage is situated next to the lake in the centre of campus, and tomorrow I'm being interviewed there as part of their regular Sunday Social meeting.

Yes, our sequel to Stolen Moments has arrived back from the printers and I am looking at the stack of boxes as I type. I might be biased, but I have to say, 'It's looking good.'

If you were one of writers selected to have your story or poem included in the book, I just want to let you know that your complimentary copy will be in the mail within the week.

If you didn't have a story or poem included in Caring Moments I encourage you to buy a copy through our online store because the book won't be in the bookstores till February 2010.

Yes, it's official the sequel to 'Stolen Moments' has finally arrived at the printers.

Despite us thinking in August that there was no way there could be any more hold-ups, there were. But with the book finally at the printers Pam and I can breathe a huge sigh of relief. We are still allowing a month till we get to hold the actual book in our hot little hands, but after the wait of the past months I am sure the time will pass quickly.

Great news! We've received feedback on the required alterations we need to make to the practical information and tips section of Caring Moments in order to get the backing of Alzheimer's Australia. Which means (drum roll please) we are now back on track and able to progress with the book.

Despite all our best laid plans, there seems to be another hold up in the process of printing 'Caring Moments'.

In order to get the backing and full support from Alzheimer's Australia there are, of course, certain requirements that must be met. It makes perfect sense that no large organisation is going to put their name on something that doesn't agree with their research. To say nothing of the fact that there would be no point in getting their support if every book ever written about Alzheimer's and Dementia could simply get their recommendation.

However, due to the officialness of the whole system, the need for us to be get all information contained in the book approved, and the flu season in the Eastern States, we have encountered still more delays.

For this our sincere apologies go out to writers and the eager readers. It was not what we planned and I can assure you that Pamela and I are doing everything we can to move things along. The only guarantee we can give to you at this point is that everything relating to the book is ready to go to the printers as soon as the official ticks are given.

Update on Stolen Moments II

Well, it's certainly taking form, our follow up to our first book, Stolen Moments, looks like it's going to be a powerful and insightful look into Alzheimer's and, in fact, Dementia as a whole.

While still filled with inspiring, true-life stories, this sequel will also contain valuable information and tips to help any Carer with the unexpected challenges of everyday living.

For this reason we are moving away from the Stolen Moments title in preference of Caring Moments.

Currently the book is being checked by experts in the field of Alzheimer's to confirm that all advice is correct, then we hope shortly to begin the transformation from manuscript to book layout.

A Solution To Wandering

Very little equates to the panic of knowing that someone you love has wondered off and may not be able to find their way back.

Which is why I was delighted to see this newspaper article about a personal tracker. Not only was it created within Western Australia (which is always good to hear), but it can also be hired by the week from Alzheimers Australia.

It might not suit everybody, but in my books anything that eases the heartache of a carer, while increasing the independence of the person diagnosed, has to be a good thing.

Following closely on the heels of Dementia week, has been our final decision in the selection process for all the stories, poems and anecdotes to be included in our next book.

Due out mid-2009 we have decided to change the format slightly from our first book, Stolen Moments. The change though is in adding content not taking it away.

The change is in keeping with our aim to support those living with Alzheimer's, whether they be family, friends, carers or those diagnosed with the disease. As a result, we are asking for your help.

Do you have a tip relating to living with Alzheimer's that you would like to share with us?

It might be something big or perhaps something you do without thinking. Pam, for example, has placed a teddy bear key-ring on the door lever on the inside of her passenger car door. A simple thing to do, but it means that her mother no longer fumbles to find the right lever to pull to get out the car by herself.

I bet if you think about it you'll come up with a bundle of ideas. You don't have to be a writer to share them, simply follow the link below and fill in the form we have set up specially for you.

Every tip, no matter how small, is bound to make somebody's life a little easier.

Dementia Week in Australia

Well it's been a busy week and a half for Pamela and me. Over here in Australia, Dementia Week has just ended, but while it was happening we were absolutely delighted to be involved in a variety of radio interviews and even a book signing at Myer in Perth.

Are you going to the Conscious Living Expo?

We'll also be giving a couple of free talks. On Thursday 4th at 3.45pm, Pam will be talking about our book, Stolen Moments. While on Friday 5th at 3pm, I'll be talking about writing your life story.

The Conscious Living Expo is being held September 4 - 7 at the Claremont Showgrounds Exhibition Centre, Claremont, WA. Entry to this expansive expo is $15.50, but all Dad's get in free on Sunday since it will be Father's Day.

Pam's Award

As anyone who has actually met her probably knows Pam has done some wonderful things for the community (on top of being the person who conceived the idea of Life's Inspirational Moments that is). Well, I heard some wonderful news last week and wanted to pass it on. She has once again been recognised for all that she has done.

At a delightful breakfast last Sunday Pam was presented with the Stella Giles Award of Excellence by the WA Soroptimists. We were so thrilled.

What's more the award comes with a cheque which means we can now put into place some of the projects we have been planning in order to offer more support to carers.

So, congratulations Pam and thank you Soroptimists.

Yes, it's official, Pamela and I will be travelling to the East Coast of Australia for a book tour! We are so excited about it.

Please mark the date in your diary, we will be arriving in Sydney on Monday 16th June and travelling around for a week.

Along with the radio and television interviews, we would love the opportunity to do some book signings, talks and workshops. So if you would like us to attend an event or book us for an event, please just ask.

Perhaps you're involved, or know somebody involved, with Alzheimers and would like to get together a group of co-workers, friends, carers or students. Perhaps you're part of a writing group and would like to know more about the production side of the book.
